One of the special features of the River Sow is it’s meanders. Most of the meanders are between Great Bridgeford and Doxey Marshes. I went to speak to the farmer, Mr Brown and he let me go in to his field to take some pictures.
What is a meander?
A meander is where the river zig zags across the land. The outside of it gets chipped away. The rocks that the river was carrying hit a corner and chips a little bit off. On the inside the river leaves behind mud that it was carrying. So after years the river has bigger meanders. Some times a little bit of the loops get cut off to form an oxbow or a horseshoe lake. The water is sometimes shallower on the outside of the loop, animals can come here to drink.
Mr Brown thinks that this meander is going to turn into an oxbow lake in the next 20 years.
