Problems with the River

Rivers can have lots of different problems.

Some rivers have pollution. This is when chemicals get into the river and kill the fish and plants. The chemicals sometimes come from factories and farm land. The River Sow doesn’t have any problems with pollution.

Sometimes in hot countries rivers dry up because there is no rain.

Flood PlainThe main problem with the River Sow is flooding. When there is a lot of rain the water runs from the hills and fields and drains into the river; some times if there is lots of water the river floods onto the land around it.

Flood plains are the area of flatland each side of the river. The ground is normally quite wet. This is where the river floods on to the area so it doesn’t come up to the houses and streets. The River Sow has flood plains at Creswell, Doxey Marshes and Stafford.

Some times when there is a lot of rain the town still floods. In 2000 there was a bad flood in the middle of the town.

Stafford Floods

The flooding is now getting worse because things are being built on the flood plains. New houses are being built and the car park by Sainsburys is on a flood plain.

New Houses

The council are spending lots of money building new flood defences on the river in Stafford to stop this happening again.
