Charles Peake

Charles’s pictures are of lost buildings in the Woodland Quarter area of Stafford, painted from memoy.

1 Gate Hall Farm, Woodwall Green, Croxton - Farm buildings. The black nad white building is where they used to thrash corn with sticks. All demolished in the 1960s.

2 Cottage by Croxton Windmill - Mr & Mrs James Butters were the last people to live in the cottage, now demolished. The windmill was recently restored and sold as a residence with a spectacular view.

3 Cuckoos Nest Cottage - This never had electricity. The drinking water was obtained from a cave. The last inhabitants were Mr & Mrs Jack Wynne who left during the war.

4 Croxton Heath Farm - 18 acres. A wooden bungalow with galvanised roof, owned and built by Mr Sam Warrilow who lived here all his married life.

5 Gonda Hall - A farm worker’s cottage of Langot Lane. Last occupied by Mr Joseph Wenlock and family who moved out in about 1940. It was then made into a farm building and is now a house again.
