The Loynton Moss Project
Imaginative youngsters at a village primary school have created a fun-packed comic book about a unique wetland nature reserve.
Children from Woodseaves Primary School, near Eccleshall, came up with a wonderfully wacky cast of characters for a colourful comic book about Loynton Moss, the first nature reserve acquired by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust in 1969.
The nine to 11-year-olds first spent an afternoon at the Eccleshall reserve with the Trust, learning about the peatland bog and the special wetland creatures that live there. Back at school, they then worked with graphic designers from Born Communication to develop stories and characters for the book, which was published to coincide with the Trust’s 40th anniversary this year.
Characters included super worm and beetle boy – two superheroes who summoned a bug army to save the reserve from being plundered for its peat.

Teacher Margaret Sproston said: “The children really enjoyed making the comic and used lots of different skills putting it together, such as using computers to create the artwork and develop a story. They also found the visit to Loynton Moss and learning about the creatures that live there very interesting. We were very pleased be a part of the Wildlife Trust’s 40th birthday celebrations.”
Trust reserves manager Helen Gee added: “The comic book is brilliant – it is so imaginative. Everyone who has seen it has been very impressed and I’d like to thank everyone for all the hard work they put into it.”
The comic was launched at a 40th anniversary party held at Loynton Moss earlier this month. It was one of many events being staged this year to celebrate the landmark birthday, including a Green Festival at the Wolseley Centre on August 5 and a Ruby Ball at the County Showground on September 26.
The project was funded through the KEV1 Community and Learning Partnership and a Staffordshire County Council Community Arts Grant.
