Izaak Walton’s Cottage
This cottage is a typical mid-Staffordshire example probably built in the 16th century. It is timber-framed with wattle and daub infill, later modified in part with brick. The cottage, together with the farm of Halfhead, and the surrounding land, was purchased by Izaak Walton in 1654, and left as a charity to the people of Stafford in his will. Izaak Walton died in 1683 and is buried in Winchester cathedral.
Izaak Walton was born in Stafford on the 9 th August 1593, the son of an alehouse keeper. Although for most of his life he lived in London, Worcester and Winchester, he retained a fond regard for this area. He is best remembered for writing the 'The Compleat Angler' which was completed in 1653.
Today, the cottage is an angling museum dedicated to Izaak Walton.

As the river leaves Shallowford it is nearing the end of its journey through what is called the Woodland Quarter.
