Mysterious Staffordshire
The strange and mysterious in the Staffordshire landscape, by Graham Phillips
Introduction
Having spent much of my life investigating unsolved British mysteries, it is not surprising that I would have been drawn to the county of Staffordshire. It seems to have far more than its fair share of myth and mystery than most counties in the country. Here, I present six Staffordshire mysteries that I have investigated. They include what is claimed to be the most haunted castle in Britain, Staffordshire’s own forgotten Stonehenge, a UFO hotspot, and the only inland mermaid legend in England. I also include a brief outline of local links with two of Britain’s most famous legends: Staffordshire may have been the birthplace of the historical Robin Hood, and it may hold the secret to the final resting place of the Holy Grail.
We at Imagining Staffordshire would welcome any stories and pictures about places you think are mysterious or have odd legends attached to them. If you would like to contribute please email
