SHUGBOROUGH – Centre of the world

Shugborough Hall - Photo courtesy David Stubbs Shugborough Hall is at the geographic centre of England and has a unique place at the centre of the history of the arts, sciences and ideas.

Admiral George Anson famously sailed round the world and his brother Thomas was also unusually widely travelled for his time. The house and its buildings (and in the 18th century its greenhouse and gardens) reflected the places, cultures, plants and wildlife they had encountered. Adventures and new experiences led to new ideas that are at the centre of the revolutionary changes of the century.

The house monuments and landscape continue to inspire and new research is revealing more of the history of the house and its creator, Thomas Anson.

Imagining Staffordshire aims to encourage new work inspired by Shugborough and to provide up to date facts about its creation.
